By Taylor Shillam
Andra and Josh Hickey are the owners of Hickey Law Firm, and they have a combination of decades of legal experience and a sincere commitment to Sandpoint. From family law and estate planning to personal injury and civil litigation, they strive to guide clients through life’s challenges responsibly and knowledgeably. Since opening in 2023, they’ve committed to creating trust, being transparent, and getting results that matter. For Andra and Josh, it’s not just about practicing law—it’s about making a real difference for their neighbors and community.
Q. Please share a bit about your professional background and experience.
A. Andra and Josh Hickey met at the University of Idaho, where they both graduated from the College of Law. Andra has practiced law in Sandpoint since March 2013, after getting her start as an associate focusing on family law at Sandpoint Law, P.C. Josh has practiced law in Sandpoint since May of 2013, starting at the Sandpoint City Attorney’s office, followed by the Bonner County prosecutor’s office. Josh joined the team Sandpoint Law, P.C. in 2015, where he focused on criminal defense, personal injury, and general civil litigation. When Andra became a partner at Sandpoint Law, P.C. in 2017, she expanded her focus to include estate planning, probates and trust administration.
Q. How did Hickey Law Firm come to be, and how has your practice grown since it started?
A. Hickey Law Firm started in June 2023, when Andra and Josh decided that branching out together was the logical next step in their careers. After Andra’s experience as a partner, she was knowledgeable and confident in her ability to do the work required to start a law firm. Today, Hickey Law Firm maintains steady caseloads.
Q. Please share a bit about the specialty services offered within Hickey Law Firm.
A. Josh focuses primarily on personal injury law, finding it rewarding to tackle the unique challenges each case presents. His caseload also includes real estate and civil litigation. Every case is different, no matter what type, and we have seen some injuries caused by crazy circumstances. Josh has successfully handled cases for clients with injuries caused by all kinds of situations.
Andra’s specialty services include premarital and postmarital agreements, along with mediation for divorce, child custody, child support, and guardianships and conservatorships.
Q. How did you decide on your areas of focus as a law firm? What needs did you recognize within the community?
A. Andra’s areas of practice are family law, family law mediation, estate planning, and probates. Family law mediators are essential in Bonner County and surrounding counties because the judges usually order each party to attend mediation and resolve their issues before going to trial. After practicing in the local community for 11 years, Andra has recognized a constant need for family law and estate attorneys. People will continue to have babies, get married (and unfortunately, sometimes divorced), and will continue to need to ensure their estate passes smoothly to the next generations.
Josh’s areas of practice are personal injury, real estate and general civil litigation, and there are not many personal injury attorneys in North Idaho, let alone Sandpoint. While it’s unfortunate, it’s common for people to get injured; fortunately, Josh can assist in making them financially whole from the damage incurred. When it comes to real estate, Josh can help tackle the real estate disputes that tend to arise in the community due to boundary lines, easements, and contractors.
Q. What are some of the strategies and aspects of your approach to clients that set you apart as a law firm?
A. We genuinely value each of our clients and strive to provide them with the best possible result. Communication is key and we make sure our clients know every step of the way to feel informed and confident. We understand that every client is different, so we customize a solution to the clients specific circumstances. Whether it’s careful planning, negotiation or advocacy in court, we remain focused on what matters to our clients. Developing trust and good working relationships is at the forefront of everything we do.
Q. What is most rewarding to you about the work you do? How does it feel to achieve results for your clients?
A. Our most rewarding moments are getting justice and realizing we’ve made a difference for our clients. It’s incredible to help someone get out of a challenging situation, whether it’s a family issue or getting compensation after a personal injury. Seeing a client’s relief and gratitude when we have a successful outcome is the best part of doing this work—not necessarily winning a case, but seeing clients through each issue and supporting them in the process.
Q. What is your vision for your practice moving forward? What’s next for Hickey Law Firm?
A. Our vision is to continue to do our best for each client, working with passion to help each person achieve the best outcomes possible. What’s next for Hickey Law Firm is continuing to make our presence known in the community and growing our connections as a new firm we started on our own.
Q. What do you enjoy most about being a part of the local community/business community?
A. The best part of living in Sandpoint is how connected and encouraged we are by our local businesses and residents. It is wonderful that small business owners are all here to support each other. We are inspired by how each company has its own part to play in improving the neighborhood and are grateful to be a part of that. It’s rewarding to be of service to those who live and work here and to help make the community stronger. This isn’t just work for us — it is about being part of a community that cares about people and comes together to make Sandpoint a great place to live and work.
Q. What message would you like to share with the Sandpoint community?
A. We would like to thank the Sandpoint community—to anyone we have helped or helped us in our profession, you have contributed to improving our practice. We welcome anyone to visit us at Hickey Law Firm. If you’d like to meet us, give us a call!
